Optimism

By Katina Connolly | August 17, 2020

This time of year is normally when we wrap up a few hectic weeks of local rentals including TOROS and the Fringe Festival. While I was devastated to miss a year of TOROS which always promises a stellar theatre production, we were very fortunate to have a digital version of the On the Edge Fringe Festival to tune into last week. In previous years, the Capitol Centre would normally be gearing up for a ‘break’ after a busy spring with a summer shutdown to prepare for a new season each fall. This year we seem to be wrapping up shutdown mode and optimistically preparing for a re-opening that we hope is just around the corner.

Current Phase 3 guidelines have allowed some staff to gradually return to the office; we are just waiting for gathering sizes to grow before we can start offering movies and, following that, smaller performances. There is lots to do so that we can be ready to go as soon as restrictions ease all the while ensuring safety is our top priority for our patrons in addition to volunteers and staff.

Despite an empty theatre (for now), the WKP Kennedy Gallery has had a successful month of visits since re-opening in July. The current exhibition, Our Bodies, Our Land is on display until the end of September and features two local artists. Visits to the gallery are by appointment only, Tuesday through Friday at 1pm, 2pm, or 3pm and can be booked by emailing [email protected]. We look forward to having you out!

In the meantime, our virtual programming is ongoing and offers a variety of entertainment events on our Facebook page including our SharedBenefit concert series, the Cultural Dance showcases, InspiRED vidcasts and so much more! Get the inside scoop on what’s coming up next by following us on Facebook and please share with your family and friends.

If you’re like the rest of us, you’re reminiscing about past Capitol Centre events, full house audiences for rock concerts, or being transported to a different place while enjoying your favourite theatre production. We can’t wait to create more memories like these with a full arts centre. In the meantime, you can share your favourite Capitol Centre memory with us and be featured on our website’s new Memory Scrapbook page. Check it out and add your highlight to the reel!

Hope everyone is staying healthy and thinking good thoughts for a fall re-opening.

Cheers,

Katina
