WKP Artist Spotlight: Andrew Morrison

Andrew Morrison also know in our community as ‘Andy Mo’ is a multi- disciplinary artist, designer and developer. Having worked as an entrepreneur for many years he understands what it takes to create an impactful experience and atmosphere for all to enjoy and feel welcome.

Whether he is creating artwork for a retail space, designing promotional content for an event or screen printing onto garments… Art has clearly been a common thread that has allowed him to create inspiring products and experiences that bring community together.

For this reason, we felt Andrew was the perfect artist to collaborate with for our upcoming interactive ‘Street Art Experience’ on August 27th between 12-5pm during the Bay Block Party!

In anticipation, we sat down with Andy Mo to learn more about what he has planned for this project…

Can you tell us about your plans for the ‘Interactive Street Art’ experience?

The goal of the interactive street art experience is to set up a blank canvas in front of the WKP Kennedy Gallery and create a collaborative work of art through community engagement. The goal is to unravel hidden layers on the canvas to expose new levels for collaborators. The final outcome of what will be created is unknown as it will be entirely determined by the interactions and engagements of the community throughout the day. Finally, I will be donated the artwork to the WKP Kennedy Gallery and it will be used as a door prize for ticket holders at Clash of the Canvas!

What role do you think public art plays within a community?

Public art can enrich a community by bringing colour and life into otherwise typical environment. The spontaneity of art in a public sphere can bring an unexpected delight and joy to those passing through a neighbourhood.

What inspires your art?

My art is inspired by my lived experiences...

Can you give an overview of your artistic practice? How will you modify your process for the day of the event?

My practice typically involves mixed media. I use a lot of layers to create depth and dimension in my work. For this specific project, I will be disguising premade layers slowly unveiling them throughout the process. This will allow different aspects of the painting to reveal themselves as existing pieces get stripped away. The process of adding and removing will be predetermined but unknown the those contributing on the street. The process will mimic the impermanence and life cycle of street art.

Is there a specific medium you enjoy working with?

I enjoy working with screen printing most.

Tell us about your studio set up. Where do you work? How do you work?

No studio. No set up. Just work where I can when I can afford to.

How do you define success as an artist?

Success as an artist is being able to make an idea or vision become something real.
